so, i knew from other people that there was a rumor that standing next to those satellite dishes on some roofs (the ones that appear to be beaming a green signal up towards the sky) helped with coding and decompiling success. what i didn't know is that on april 23 one of the mxo admins confirmed this! maybe you all knew this already but just in case you didn't:

Re: Satellite dishes on roofs, mXo.Twitch:

According to the official Matrix Online guide.

Signal Boosters (satellite dish) can help you to successfully code abilities, weapons and other items.

If you are in a higher level area you get a bigger bonus from the booster. [emphasis added]

I noticed this isn't in the knowledgebase so I will add this to it.

-MxO.Twitch.

speaking of coding, although they are going to "fix" this (if they haven't already?), one thing i noticed was that whether or not a particular coding effort is successful must be determined right when you initiate coding, as demonstrated inadvertently when they took out the coding timer in that 2nd to last patch. the whole progress bar thing is totally cosmetic. ha! and i always used to feel such tension when it got close to the end of the bar.

totally tangentially, how are you guys doing with the new and improved mission mobs? on the one hand, i really appreciate that i can't just run solo through a hard mission, blasting away and laughing merrily while mobs try to break my EC shield, on the other hand, i've become unpleasantly acquainted with the limits of gunman load when you are constantly disarmed. heheh. i can't even imagine how MA folk can fight orange con mobs now that they actually use tactics and abilities. :o

two different server boards sort of cataloguing what's happened so far in the event.

disconnected boards, (think they're on iterator) (yeah, here's the iterator mxo board post)

regression mxo boards

basically there is a possible fourth faction fighting for ascendence, a lupine/blood-drinker one, warring against the merv for survival. what happens to them and those redpills who support them we can only speculate...

personally i've basically missed this entire event so far, i still haven't even seen a blood drinker or lupine, heh. :P

The Lack of Importance of Levels in MxO

basically the OP's main point is that splitting the game up by level doesn't really do anything productive and there should be more level-linked content/features. not sure if i agree totally but he raises some interesting points. read the post and discussion if you have time.

**EDIT

also, for those who don't check the main mXo site for headlines they have more info up about the latest upcoming event... cryptic to say the least. (well, for me, i'm wholly unfamiliar with the situation in the international district) (another case for the rebuttal that levels do very much matter)

Live Events: Nightfall - Tooth and Nail

Four dark and bestial figures prowled through the alleyway near the Chinatown Market, clinging to the shadows as though the light from the neon signs a few buildings down was toxic. Interlopers aren't welcome here, but even at a glance I could tell this group was more than I could take on my own. Pulling back into the darkness of a space between buildings so narrow it could barely qualify as an alley, I studied them, undetected.

There were two males and one female, normal enough at first glance. If you've seen one lupine you've pretty much seen ‘em all. You'll see their kind down in the Barrens sometimes – you might ask why I was down there, but that's none of your business – but you only see lupines in Shinjuku when they're running errands for the Merovingian. Those are the ones you don't mess with. Dangerous doesn't begin to describe them.

There was another leading the trio, female and much different than the others. Not even the accumulated filth of years could hide the smell of her power. She wore leather clothing trimmed in fur like the rest, but with style – a rare thing among the ragged dog packs tasked with licking the Frenchman's boots. When they moved on down the alley I got a better look at her and noticed the kanji tattooed on her arm: Ookami, wolf.

I had no idea she was still alive.

Sure, there were rumors that the "free wolves" in Widow's Moor were restless with all the new humans running around, but nobody said anything about her. I ducked further back behind a stack of boxes piled against the end of a dumpster, watching, straining to overhear some clue as to what they were up to. As they passed my hiding spot, she turned her head toward me.

Ookami smiled. Or at least, bared her teeth.

The pack was laughing at some comment of hers as they stalked toward Club Masamune, but I was too shaken to try following right away. The only reason you go there is to see Dame White, and if that's what they had in mind, something big must be going down.

After I stopped shaking, I headed across the alley to check where they'd been. That's when I found the bodies. Pathetic, still warm; identities all but obliterated by lupine claws. One was still wearing her jade crescent pendant.

I need to report this to my Shinai.

From William: Mission XP Timer Update

Dear Community,

After reviewing the impact of Monday's mission XP change, we agree that the new timer affects too many players. The settings were too extreme, hurting people who are just trying to have a good time.

As a result, we are pulling the timers way back – effective immediately. Limits will be roughly 1/5th of the previous cap—about 2 minutes per mission phase. Overall, we expect that the vast majority of players will see XP return to the previous levels. Also, we plan to eliminate the cap from story and neighborhood missions in a patch coming soon. If you continue to experience the mission cap, please petition us under in-game feedback and describe how you completed your mission.

We have greatly appreciated your constructive feedback and your clear desire to help us make MxO great. We remain dedicated to making sure MxO is as fun as possible for the entire community and apologize for any frustration that you have felt this week.

Thanks,
ww

well. wow. what do ya know. either the people bitching on the forums won out or there were a LOT of private petitions. or some combination of both.

that's some responsiveness right there. wow. honestly, i would not have minded if all the people who so childishly bitched and whined about the timer patch had followed through on their threats and actually left. if you take something like exp gain that seriously, i don't think we're in the game for the same reasons... that said, either way it's gratifying to see how responsive the devs were to feedback whether or not i agreed with it aside.

anyone around to check the mission timer cap while the rest of us are at work? :)

So what server is everyone playing on? Who do you work for? (if anyone) What's your characters name? What skills are you focusing on?
My character is Angela Mayhew, or Anngelus (Angelus with only one n was taken). I'm mainly focusing on operative because it's more entertaing.
I decided to work for the machines, for too many reasons to go into here. But in a quick and dirty version, not everyone wants out of the matrix, and zion believes everyone should be taken out. They may say otherwise, and claim freedom of choice, but they don't mean it. Infact I recently did a mission for the machines where a redpill wanted to be reinserted back into the matrix, and zion actively opposed his desision and kept him under guard so he couldn't be reinserted and tried to kill anyone who wanted to help him. That doesn't sound like freedom of choice to me. As far as the merovingion goes, he's just pretty much a mafia guy who will kill you if you screw up, as he's already threatened his followers with. And in a personal opinions I don't think most people should be allowed out of the matrix. Case in point. I was recently followed relentlessly by some strange guy who kept trying to kiss me, in addition to having stripped off all of his clothes. That was creepy. When you mix that up with those idiots who stand at hardlines and kill anyone who pops up, I don't think I need to go on. I support the machines.
Oh yeah, and I'm on heuristic. (I think that's how you spell it). If anyone of an brain power is interested in starting a crew or whatever they're called, let me know.

so, as all of two days old now, it seems like almost everyone on the official mxo boards is still going berserker over the patch or "exp nerf" or "time nerf" or "most horrible mistake ever!!"

and honestly i don't see what the big deal is.

to be fair i only popped in for a little bit on monday to do a mission and - oh, how embarassing - i wasn't even aware of the patch so when i got whatever amount of exp i got for the mission i thought nothing of it. (i run tiny hard btw)

shifting past the all-caps rants and postings of people's contact information and threats to leave, the main gripe as far as i can suss out is that a) the patch went too far in "fixing" the various mission exploits and it went in too late to catch the real offenders.

is it just me or are these two things really not that huge a deal? they'll tweak the fix and they might (although i doubt it) somehow punish the exploiters ie by dropping their levels. a variety of alternate fixes have been suggested all with varying levels of feasibility and hopefully the dev team isn't so silly as to think they've struck the right solution with the time-dependent exp cap because smarter players have already realized the time they waste sitting out a 30 minute mission they could simply adjust to the realities of lower exp per mission and continue grinding out missions at their own faster pace, making less exp on the whole but not wasting time sitting around for even LESS exp (ie counting the exp you get from killing mobs, or for those who complain that infiltrators really got the pointy end, doing 6 or 7 missions in 30 minutes instead of 1 surely must net more exp)

too bad this patch came in at the same time as supposed new storyline material. i didn't even realize (hey, aren't we supposed to receive the new sentinel in our email?) a new sentinel had come out with various clues as to new developments. and though i have heard that the storyline appears to be approaching something similar to the end of beta, i think it would be interesting to see the devs take the storyline that way and then make a sudden twist in the plot instead.

just thought i should make a post with a quick introduction, and say hello, hi!

v1x
L15 gunman/infiltrator
merovingian
faction x

i'm not one of the beta players, i actually only heard about this game in late march through chr0me_kitten but after doing a bit of investigating i was thoroughly enamored of the idea and ended up getting mXo shortly thereafter. v1x is actually my fourth character, as it took a while for me to nail down exactly what i wanted in my RSI. initially i actually tried to play multiple chars across servers but the time commitment required would have been totally nuts. also at some point i learned to fully appreciate the flexibility in the mXo ability system and realized that the only real limit to the number of abilities you *could* load (obviously not necessarily concurrently... i think with a possible max total of 100 memory at L50 you can at best be master at one profession and moderately decent at one other at the same time) was $inf, which flows freely and plentifully from missions. i'm pointedly ignoring the beginning stats layout "restriction" because i think it would be nice if people didn't tailor their stats for the express purpose of being an uberwhatever and instead picked their beginning layout from a slightly more RP perspective. admittedly my backstory is a little lacking but it's there, and it explains his 11 belief and 5 reason base stat build. at some point i decided to focus on being a gun operative and yeah, it would have been nice to have a character who immediately had 11 focus to help with ranged CT but that's what the 1 stat point you get per level is for.

was that a ramble? why yes, i do believe it was. sorry.

anyways, if you're on iterator look me up sometime.

just in case you didn't know:

stats (other than vitality) don't give any benefit until after 10 (here's the mXo vault full breakdown of what helps what, etc)

The MxO folks have opened two new servers with players in Europe in mind:

News: Two New Servers!

The Matrix Online team is pleased to announce the addition of two new servers: Input and Output. These two servers were created in an effort to assure our European customers would not miss out on the Live Event Team’s storyline endeavors. You will see these servers represented on the list like this:

Input-Hostile-EU

Output-EU

As you can see, players have the choice of playing on a hostile world via Input, or an opt-in PvP world via Output. In addition, the live events schedule on both Input and Output will be adjusted to meet the needs of our European players. Players on these worlds will be able to participate in live events a day later than the events on other servers, with events targeted to occur during European prime-time play. For example, if a live event is delivered on Line Noise, it will also be delivered on Input and Output roughly 16 hours later.

They've also posted a schedule for live events and new cinematics.

Paul Chadwick interviews the Wachowski brothers, ign

April 11, 2005 - The Matrix Online has been in full swing for a couple of weeks now. To help peel back some of the mystery of the game, writer Paul Chadwick (of Concrete fame) managed to corner Larry and Andy Wachowski. Paul asked them a few questions about their expectations and intentions with The Matrix Online.

Paul Chadwick: What are you expecting to see from The Matrix Online?

The Wachowski Brothers: Our expectations are high, perhaps unreasonably so, but only because we're as anxious for a really good MMO as every other gamer. Obviously the most important thing we're looking for is for it to be fun, to be a game that we'd be interested in playing. Right now, the idea of MMOs, a multitude of gamers jacked into the same "computer generated dream world," is more interesting than the games themselves. We are hoping that The Matrix Online changes that.

Paul Chadwick: Is it difficult, after meticulously crafting the Matrix films shot by shot, to subject your child to the vagaries of a MMO, where unpredictable player behavior is the rule?

The Wachowski Brothers: The "vagaries of an MMO where unpredictable player behavior is the rule," is the reason for doing it. Our films were never intended for a passive audience. There are enough of those kinds of films being made. We wanted our audience to have to work, to have to think, to have to actually participate in order to enjoy them. This may be because while we enjoy movies, we also spend a lot of time (as in crack-den amounts of time) gaming.

Gaming engages your mind actively whereas most genre films (the films we tend to watch) are designed to provoke as little thinking as possible. Consider why the films in which everyone knows exactly what is going to happen are the films that make the most money.

Yet the fact that the Matrix films are three of the most successful adult films in history (despite of what much of the media would have us believe), suggests that there are other people like us. Those are the people, the people who thought about it, who worked at it, who we ultimately made the trilogy for and it now makes perfect sense to us that they should inherit the storyline. For us, the idea of watching our baby evolve inside the virtual bubble-world of this new radically developing medium, which has in our opinion the potential of combining the best attributes of films and games, of synthesizing reality TV with soap opera, RPGs and Mortal Combat, is fantastically exciting.

Paul Chadwick: The first thing you gave me was a theme for the first year: Peace and the ways people wreck it. Do we, always?

The Wachowski Brothers: As individuals, it seems that peace may be something that is attainable, but as a group, history sadly suggests that it is an improbability, if not an impossibility.

Paul Chadwick: Why did you go with Monolith? Why'd you hire me?

The Wachowski Brothers: We felt a technological advance was needed for the kind of MMO that we were interested in and Monolith seemed poised on the verge of such a breakthrough. They were also very committed to the notion of an MMO strongly based on story content.

We couldn't afford Alan Moore or Joss Whedon or J. Michael Straczynski or Brian Michael Bendis or... Just kiddin'. We love Concrete (Human Dilemma rocks! Literally.), which is why we first called you to do a short for the online comics. Your story demonstrated your talent at exploring complex ideas in interesting dramatic ways. And David Lapham was busy.

Paul Chadwick: Will you be playing? If so, how will people know it's really you?

The Wachowski Brothers: Of course. For us it sounds a lot more fun if people don't know it's us, but if you're looking you might try asking the goth-chick what vis-à-vis really means.

I hope nobody here minds a tiny advertisement. I noticed that there isn't a community specifically for the Matrix Online, so I went ahead and set one up. It's a completely blank canvas at the moment (I haven't even had a chance to change the default layout). But I thought I'd go ahead and let people know it exists and see if maybe we could get some discussion started!

So, if you're interested, please check out mxo

Thanks!

After playing MxO for a solid week, I've decided that it's just not enough of a game to keep me interested. The fighting is entirely too loose, and not centered for group play. The quest structure seems entirely too simplistic, and I see very little reason to travel in game.

I'm going to watch the development over the next month and see if any of these things get adjusted, but I just don't feel it's a quality game yet. :\ Too bad too, I really wanted this to own. Here's to hoping.

Atari to Release New 'Matrix' Game This Holiday

Mon Feb 14,10:34 AM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Video game publisher Atari Inc. will return to the universe of "The Matrix" with a new game that lets players assume the role of actor Keanu Reeves' lead character Neo, the company said on Monday.

"The Matrix: Path of Neo" will be out this holiday season for the PC and leading game consoles, Atari said.

The Wachowski brothers, who wrote and directed the "Matrix" trilogy of films and directed the 2003 video game "Enter the Matrix," will write and direct for the new game as well.

Might have to make this a general matrix gaming community.

Just joined up today, however I have yet to even try the beta out. I was unaware of the stress test, therefore, long story short, didn't sign up.

However, I was considering putting down the $5 on the pre-sale beta slot, but I have a few questions about how the game works.

First of all, is there group quests? So far everything I've seen is individuals throwing down some neat combat skills. Also, how does group fighting work?

Second, what exactly is the currency of the game? I read that it is "data information", but how exactly is it counted out. Basic numerics, or something else?

Last, but not least, anyone running a GeForce FX 5600? How does the game run, if so?

Thanks all.

Hello all!

Just joined the community. I've been beta testing MxO and it's fantastic so far (if a bit buggy..but it is beta-testing after all!)

I've written fanfiction for my character that includes features and a gang from the game. Would it be all right to post it here?

Thanks!

Hi all. :) Just joined this community, huge fan of the movie(s), game (what I know if it anyhow, nice pioneering idea,) and philosophy.
Anyone else had a problem with ordering from land-stores? (US) Canceling my order tomorrow and ordering online from EB Games instead of Gamestop because the people that worked there (GS) had no idea what the hell was going on with Mx0, much less any other preorder.
But this has not lessened my appetite for Mx0! :D
Anyone plan on forming a group, team, sect, or any type of grouping thereof? :)
